Torre Malakoff
The Malakoff Tower, located in Recife Antigo, in the city of Recife, takes its name from one of the towers of the Sevastopol fortress during the Crimean War (1853 and 1855). A provincial decree of January 1834 created the naval arsenal and the architectural project was built in 1837. In 1853 the construction of the so-called Monumental Door of the Naval Arsenal began, near the Port of Recife. At the time of its construction, there have been many reports published by Diario de Pernambuco on the Crimean War, in particular the center of resistance in defense of the hill and the fortified tower of Malakoff, which has generated great interest in Recife and throughout the country . State of Pernambuco. According to the doctor and historian Pedro Veloso Costa, the baptism of the tower with the name Malakoff was given by the population itself, which at that time was following the distant battle for the newspaper. When the naval arsenals were extinct with the beginning of the Republic, the Tower was transferred to the patrimony of Porto, and then abandoned and threatened with extinction. The population, under the guidance of the literary and cultural institutions of Recife, mobilized against the demolition, using as an example the resistance of Malakoff in the Crimean War, and was then used as a center of irradiation of Culture in the city. There, for some time, there was an astronomical observatory that was later used for scientific studies. Word processing: Giovambattista Spagnuolo (Myooni)
