Tourist Attraction in Monte Argentario: Fortezza Spagnola
The Spanish fortress is an imposing coastal fortification situated in a dominant position within the town of Porto Santo Stefano, the capital of the municipality of Monte Argentario. The complex was built by the Spaniards between the late 16th and early 17th century, after Porto Santo Stefano became part of the State of the Presidium. The site chosen for the construction of the fortified defensive structure had already been chosen by the Senesi for the construction of the tower of Santo Stefano during the fifteenth century. At the beginning of the 19th century, the French strengthened the defensive structure to withstand any assaults on British ships during the Napoleonic period. Subsequently, the entire territory became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Lorrains carried out some restoration work on the flooring.
