Tourist Attraction in San Salvo:
Parco archeologico del Quadrilatero
The Archaeological Park of the Quadrilateral is located in the historic center of San Salvo. In Roman times the Quadrilateral was affected by a building intervention to strengthen the connections between Italy and the Balkans some archaeological excavations found that in the third century the center was an important market for products destined for maritime export and at the same time it was place of storage and organization for the transport of provisions for the legions located in the Danube region. On the Trigno, there was a small port that served the Balkans, perhaps identifiable with the Trinium portuosum of Pliny the Elder. In the Middle Ages the area of the Quadrilateral assumed its present form: towards the end of the 13th century the abbey of Santi Vito e Salvo was founded on a pre-existing late Roman settlement. The monks reformed the Benedictine community already present in the territory since 1173. Excavations on the spot have brought to light a medieval settlement referable to the abbey.
