Gran Meteora
The Great Meteora, or monastery of the Transfiguration, is an Orthodox Christian monastery, which is part of the Meteor monasteries, located in Greece, in the region of Thessaly. Located at 534 meters above sea level, the monastery is accessible only by the use of stairs carved into the rock. A first chapel existed since the fourteenth century, founded by St. Athanasius of the Meteors. The present monastery was founded in 1536 and built between 1545 and 1582 on the example of the churches of Mount Athos (with 3 shells and double exonarthex). The original chapel was integrated into the present church as a sanctuary and decorated with frescoes from the 14th and 15th century. Text processing: Giovambattista Spagnuolo (Myooni)
